Home for the Sun
Waverton, Sydney
Cammeraygal
Completed, 2023
This courtyard house is both restoration and reinvention: a heritage-listed Queen Anne dwelling reshaped into a home of warmth, privacy, and longevity.
The design begins with light and gardens. Two courtyards carve into the plan, capturing the sun at different times of day and offering sanctuary from surrounding neighbours.
These outdoor rooms extend the living spaces into the landscape, essential to clients who are keen gardeners seeking daily connection with planting and the seasons.
The heritage-listed fabric turns inward into discrete rooms, while the contemporary rear addition looks outward through a checkerboard arrangement of solid and glass curtain walls, creating rhythm between openness and enclosure.
Materials continue this dialogue: the ensuite reinterprets the original veranda in stone and timber, while enduring finishes are chosen to age gracefully over decades of living.
Small moments such as a circular skylight crowning the mezzanine playroom adds character to remind us that a forever home flexes for different generations and ways of living.
