Home for Light

Home can hold many roles at once: a place for private family life, a setting for quiet conversations, and a space for the wider community. A Home for Light embraces this complexity, designed for a pastor whose residence also needed to serve as a gathering place. The terrace at the front provides rooms of intimacy and calm, well-suited to private counselling and meetings in spaces that feel established and trustworthy. At the rear, the character transforms. A contemporary addition opens wide to the garden, creating a light-filled space for community gatherings and contemporary living.
Glass walls blur the threshold between inside and outside, while the gently sloping site provides natural levels that organise different gathering areas for meeting and celebration. A pool tucked into the landscaping provides the family with privacy and rest. What connects front and back, old and new, is light: daylight threads through the house, carrying openness from the heritage rooms to the contemporary spaces beyond. The Redfern House demonstrates how architecture can expand and contract to meet the rhythms of life. Intimate one moment, communal the next.
