Home for Art

Home often reveals itself most clearly through the things we choose to live with. The art, books and objects collected over time, and how they settle in amongst our lives. This apartment in Chippendale celebrates this layering of personal expression, shaping a space where an industrial shell becomes a warm home with space for an art collection.

Set within a converted warehouse, the apartment retains its original structure of exposed ceiling beams and timber posts. Large windows flood the space with natural light while opening the view to the tree canopy, softening the rawness of the building’s fabric and transforming it into a generous backdrop for contemporary living.

Colour is used sparingly but with impact. The walls, floor and internal door lining of the powder room is clad in a deep red rubber transforming the space into a tactile, fun and contained surprise. In the bedroom, joinery sits boldly in front of the window; when its doors are opened, a pale blue interior is revealed and light filters through, creating a surprising moment of transparency and delight.

The kitchen is raised three steps above the main floor, set apart yet still visually connected. A timber-veneer cabinet forms a half-wall at its rear, adding storage while helping to partition the open plan. This simple move creates a sense of rooms within the larger space, offering structure without closing anything off. Throughout, white walls maximise light and space, while timber tones bring warmth.
